Did you know...
Soil science is part of your life everyday, you just may not know it. Here are some examples of soil affects you daily.
Collegiate Soil Judging
Did you know that soil judging is a national intercollegiate contest which occurs every year at Universities around the country. Schools first compete at the regional level in the fall and the top winning teams, go on to compete in the National contest in the spring. The location of the regional and national contests rotate every year.
During a contest, students are asked to describe the characteristics of a soil profile in four different pits. Characteristics the students must consider include color, texture, consistence, structure, and other properties of each soil horizon. Each of these properties can provide information about the suitability of the particular soil for any number of land uses.
In this picture, four members of the NC State Soil Judging Team are characterizing a contest pit at the national competition held in Missouri in the Spring of 2010.
